I'm a dog trainer, man, so we're in the same, we're in the same two rookies trying to figure this out. So anyhow, at least, at least we're passionate about what we do, so that makes it easy.

So, , okay. Well, I want-- Tim, grateful for your time. Thank you for coming on here. I know you're a busy guy, , and I'm excited to get to know you better and hear more about you. I've been following you on social media, and we have a common friend, , Ben Proctor with, , BPro Kennels. He's a great guy and, , so we'll probably, maybe we'll dive into that a little bit too. But, , give us, just give us a background about you and, and, , tell me, tell me about your hunting. I guess, where, as a hunter, where did you start? Where do you-- Have you been hunting since you were a little kid? Where you get, did you get into hunting later? Let's first talk about hunting, so.

Tim Brown

Okay. , so my dad and my brothers, I've got two older brothers and then my dad, and, and my brothers are 10 plus years older than me. So they were, they were hunting when they were younger too, and then when I got young enough, they were practically adults, so I would just tag along with them. And I'd more, more than times, or more times than not, I would sit in the car while they went out and walked a draw in eastern Iowa and, and that's how you hunted pretty much back then, was there was draws and, and there was big chunks of CRP too back then. But it was mostly just little walks, and I'd sit there and wait and they'd come back or, or then when I got old enough, I would walk with them. And, then finally, you know, 10, 12 years old, started to carry a gun, started to walk with them and, that was in the early... late, late '80s, early '90s when I started doing that. So it

in the peak of the CRP boom in Iowa where there was literally pheasants everywhere. I mean, Iowa, Iowa rivaled South Dakota for pheasant numbers in,

Tyce

Tim Brown

those years. And then, , the CRP started coming out, and it just kept getting harder and harder and harder to hunt birds, and they were just disappearing. We had a really bad storm in '97, the year that I graduated, that, really put a hurting on the bird population back

Tyce

Mm.

Tim Brown

and it never really recovered for the longest time just because of farming practices and, and the way things go, and prices and all that stuff. So they're starting to come back now. There's people that are putting more, , acres into set-aside and stuff like that. It's just, it's not near what it was in, like, the early '90s, right?

Tyce

What, what were they pulling the CRP? What were they, what are they replacing the CRP with?

Tim Brown

You went right back to corn and beans.

Tyce

Okay

Tim Brown

, in the '80s when they, when they made that program, the CRP program, it was to offset the surplus of grain that we had. We had too much, and it was driving the price down.

Tyce

So they paid farmers to put it into CRP, right? Is that what it was?

Tim Brown

like, kinda took off,

my recollection anyway. I mean, like, don't quote me on anything. I'm not

on this stuff, but

we're gonna... We're sharing best of our knowledge.

Yeah, yeah. So when that stuff started going away, , the CRP program took a dive. I mean, it went from, like, 30... I can't remember. It was, like, 32-some million acres of ground went down to, like, 24

Tyce

Oh, wow

Tim Brown

And it's a 10-year program, so, like, it's only... You're only out of circul- or out of, you know, , production for 10 years, and then it comes up again. And if you wanna enroll it again, a new price for the... it per acre, and it's a new... it... Everything's new, right?

Tyce

Mm-.

Tim Brown

off of what your, , revenue is on the ground or whatever. I, I, I don't know the technical terms of it, but it goes by what production is on your ground before, you

Tyce

corn out there, is, is it silage they're harvesting or is it more dr- they're letting it dry out on the stalk and then harvest it? Plant field cor- or yeah, what are they doing with

Tim Brown

it's f- it's field corn. It just

lot of it goes to, like, feed for cattle or hogs or whatever,

Iowa's got more... Like the c- couple counties up by me have more hogs than they do people.

Tyce

Tim Brown

and, like,

Oh, wow.

in the... More hogs in those counties than the whole state of Iowa has people, kind of thing. So

and there's a lot of beef, too. It's not near as big, but there's a lot of dairy up here, too. So, like, they'll take the silage off or they'll take, you know, they'll chop all kinds of stuff. So it's a little, little more diverse up here, but it's

it's still mostly corn and beans. And then some gets taken for ethanol. I mean, everything is... It,

Tyce

Ja

Tim Brown

revolves around that ethanol stuff. So it's, it's a losing battle, you know, in the long run. We're losing more acres than we know what to do with. And I mean, you can tell in some parts of the state that the pheasant population, it shows it. And our deer population, it shows it.

Tyce

Hm.

Tim Brown

I mean, when you think Iowa, you're thinking big deer, right?

Tyce

Ja,

Tim Brown

it just, it's going the wrong way. We've had, we've had some meetings and, and stuff like that, that they want public input, and there just isn't a whole lot of deer in certain counties, trying to figure out why. And, you know, the EHD comes, and it, it, it really hits us hard when it's, when it happens. But, , that's just another aspect of it or whatever. We can talk about that later. But going

Sure. Is the farming just... Yeah, sorry, real quick. Is the f- the farming is just too clean, right? Is that kinda allows the birds not to have the cover and the nesting, and then that affects everything? Yeah.

mean, it, it's great... Corn and beans are great cover in the summer

Tyce

Sure. Yeah

Tim Brown

don't have anything that can get them in the summer. It's when you pick it all, and then it's just bare dirt

Tyce

Fair ground, yeah.

the winter is the time that they need

Tyce

Hammers are the worst. Yeah. Yep, yep

and that's the good thing about the, like this northwest corner of the state. There's a lot of crick lines and a lot of draws that in the spring, they fill up with water too much, and you can't really just, like, tile

Clean them out

clean it out. So there's always gonna be something there. It's just we're gonna have a bad winter one of these years, and it's really gonna sock us

just because they don't have any of that thermal cover. And the wood lots help a lot. Like, everybody that's got an acreage usually has a wood lot,

there's a lot getting torn out now for people building new houses and stuff. I mean, it just, just, it's... 10 years that I've lived up here, it's, it's considerably different. Like,

Tim Brown

knew that were there that you drive by it, you would never think that there was something there, and it used to hold hundreds of pheasants, and it's just gone. And it doesn't

like it's gone, right?

Tyce

Yeah, but they do seem, they're, they seem to be doing a little better the last couple years though.

Tim Brown

yeah, our, our pheasant population, I've hunted up here for 20 years, and it's never really, like fell way off.

Tyce

Tim Brown

just because it's a little hillier, it's a little nastier, and they can't, they can't, like get a whole lot, , that they haven't already gotten, right? So it, the, the cover's still there. There's a lot of farmers up here that, that are pheasant hunters too that

Tyce

to keep some ground around. So like that core area that they have, yeah, there's gonna... You might not be able to hunt it, but that's just a place for all them birds to go in that real nasty time of the season,

Tyce

Ja, ja.

spread out to the s- the thinner stuff earlier in the season when it's nice out, you know?

Tyce

Mm-

then when it gets really nasty, they go, they go back to that. So there,

just, it is what it is, you know?

Yeah, cool

, so going back to, to how I grew up, , I got out of bird hunting all together in the late two... or the late '90s, early 2000s. I, my brother lives

Tyce

Those were probably some dark years, huh?

Tim Brown

, yeah, I mean, it was, we just, we just foc- refocused onto deer hunting instead, right?

Tyce

Okay.

Tim Brown

, down south of Des Moines, my brother lives down there, and we got into deer hunting pretty good, and had, had some really good ground that we hunted. Shot some really good deer. But I didn't, didn't really... I'm not really a guy that can sit still very often. I don't like just, just sitting in one place.

Tyce

Tim Brown

I always wanted to, and then working with one of my best friends at a, at a warehouse in Cedar Rapids, and that year, it would've been 2007, of January 2007, he brought me up here to his family, family farm, and it was the last weekend of the season, it was in January, and we shot the piss out of them. There was birds everywhere and I'm like, "Okay, this,

Tyce

This is what I've been missing.

Tim Brown

this is what I've been missing." And the bad thing wa- like I got done, we got done, and I'm like, "You know what? This, I, the, I, I wanna do this." 'Cause they had, my buddies had really great dogs back then,

Tyce

Mm-.

Tim Brown

If I want my own dog, I wanna do this. I'm, I'm, that's it, I'm done. I'm not gonna go deer hunting anymore. I'm going up there to go bird hunting."

Ja.

Tim Brown

And so that spring I got Gus, which was my wirehaired that, my first dog that I had. And

Tyce

So previous to this, sorry, I'm gonna cut in here if that's all right. Previous, you, you didn't have dogs growing up or you did have dogs growing up?

Tim Brown

We did, we did, but they were outside dogs and it was, you know, they're hunting dogs that get out, know, four, five times a year, you know what I mean? And

the time or we're, we're running working dogs. I mean, you're not, you're not going crazy with it, but like they were just, they were just

Kind of a dog that you take out here and there and just if it, they found some birds and just kind of rough training and stuff makes sense.

you know, you didn't have to work that hard for birds back then, 'cause

literally, there was birds everywhere.

it wasn't the... Like, you didn't have to have really good

good dogs. Yeah

to worry about, you had to worry about, you know, bumping birds because you could go another 20 yards and there's gonna be 10 more. You know what

So it, it, it, it went that way. But then when I got him, I just said I, I was done. And we went up there, , we

Was he a Griff or what was he?

Nope, it was just a straight wire

story of all that was my brother had really good short hairs, , he gonna have puppies, and my brother and one of our good friends, one of our good friends had the male that was breeding to him.

choice of litter, 'cause that was the, you know, that's how you do it when you breed dogs. , then my other brother was getting a puppy also, and then I was gonna get one. Well, she had complications. She got septic. She lost

half of the puppies. She had three puppies total. So I was out. I was the

out, which was fine.

my buddy Randy, Randy, his bro- or his cousin grew wire, or raised wire hairs, and I knew the, the family, so I wasn't like, like, "Yeah, that, perfect. I'll, I'll take one of those." And the crazy thing is, like, everybody asks, like, "How do you pick out a dog?" And all this and that. I didn't see Gus , he was brought to me. I,

I told Terry's dad, 'cause Terry's dad raised dogs for, I don't know, my entire life. I don't,

he had been raising dogs. I said, "John, just whatever one that you would take, that's the one I want."

So he brought me Gus and, and it was, it, it was done. I was

How old was he when you got-- how old was Gus when you got him?

eight, eight weeks. He

Oh, eight weeks. Okay, so he was a puppy. He didn't have him. Okay.

brought him up 'cause he was coming back. 'Cause they live in Missouri, so he was bringing him back up for, I don't know what it was, their family reunion or something, and he brought him up and then it, yeah, I was done. was it. It over. Didn't wanna do, I don't wanna do anything else than that.

What made you decide to get a wire hair over a GSP?

out now. Like, the kennel that I got Mack and, , Ansel from, his dogs are... I don't, I don't think that I've ever to work with him on retrieving. They j- it's just natural, and that's how he breeds them. Like, he's not gonna breed anything that doesn't have that natural...

yeah. And, you know, with the short hair, that's kinda sometimes, that's kind of a hard thing to,

right? So that, that's kinda how I pick them out. Like, , Terry's actually, , we're trying to get his female bred that would be what would it be? Great niece or niece or something. line's still there, so we're trying

Mm-. Mm-. When did you, when did you pick up Gus again? What year was that?

It does seem like, it does seem like the pointers, like short hairs and stuff tend to live a little longer than like your retrievers. Your labs and those, that bre- those breeds, you know? It's, I mean, longest I've ever had is 13 and a half and, but most of them are passing between 12 and 13 on average I'd say, you know? So you start getting 14, fi- I mean, that's, that's pretty amazing that they can make it that

c- the crazy thing is Gus hunted 13 years. I mean,

year we cherry-picked a lot, 'cause that would've been Mack's first year was his last year.

so Mack was, he was thrown right into the fire of, of everything. So he, did really well at, you know, he was eight months when, when hunting season started and, and the first bird that fell, he went and retrieved it. And

we were hunting, and she started throwing up, and it was all just nasty stuff. And I'm like, "What is going

she wanted to hunt and sometimes she's like, really feel like it today. I'm just not gonna, you

yeah, typical females. You know how that is. yeah, so, so then sh- you know, we got back, and she just, when we got back she just started losing the weight, and it just was just She wouldn't eat anything, and

and they did a, they did a scan and, and it was, it was just growing around the whole throat, and it was just cutting everything off. So she wasn't comfortable, and then she got down to I- it was was all still there, like, mentally and loved on me, you know, d- everything that she usually did, but it was like, I can't watch her wither away to nothing and,

Yeah.

What kind of cancer was it?

I don't know. We didn't, we didn't

she was almost 13 years old at that time,

she was 12, but it was like, you know And it was a big mass, and it's like, it's

you put chemo in a 13-year-old, 12-year-old dog, it's just not gonna

A lot of money, she's old. Yeah, it's not, yeah

her enjoy the last, you know, week that we had together, that we did have together, than be just sick and miserable for two months, and then it not even work, you know?

you know, you And that's the hardest thing about being a dog owner. You gotta make that decision.

they're not gonna, they're not gonna not, you know,

up for you, you know what I mean? So it's like,

It's like people when you see someone go through cancer and then they, you know, you kinda wanna, you feel, you wanna remember them for how they were, not like sometimes the last few months of their life when they're just withered away to nothing and they're not, you know. So

anybody. So, you know, you have to m- you know, be a little selfish and, and you just have to not be that way, just

yeah. So did that and then, , I got her back and I thought, "You know what? I gotta put her with Gus," 'cause that was the spots that she liked to hunt was that short grass prairie out in, out in

And I honestly think all my dogs are gonna be there, just because it's my favorite field in the entire country

And like I was telling Tyler on his podcast, Tyler Webster, I was telling him, I was like, him and, and Aaron are one of, two of six people that know that exact spot.
